We first visited Paris on a whirlwind trip pre-babies around 1980. Mark was a med student at the time so we were on a bread, cheese and fruit diet and stayed in the cheapest places we could find. We only went inside somewhere if it was free, but there was plenty to see and do in Paris that didn’t require payment. Walking everywhere and hitting the free museum days provided plenty of wonderful diversions.
Interestingly enough, 30+ years later, we still thoroughly enjoy picnics in Paris (indoors or out) of bread, cheese, fruit, salads (and now wine). However, we are now extremely fortunate to be having those indoor “picnics” at Rue Dauphine, an apartment in a superb location within easy walking distance of the Luxembourg Gardens, the Louvre, the Pont Neuf, Thermes of Cluny, St Germain Church, the Conciergerie (with the magnificent Ste Chappelle!), Notre Dame, Place St Michele and all the other treasures of the St Germain neighborhood, including its food shops and markets and grocery stores and SO many art galleries.
We highly recommend a stay at this fantastic apartment, owned by my sister and her husband, at any time of year!
Below is a map of the neighborhood (the Dauphine Paris apartment is generally located at the red marker). A few of the major sites within walking distance are marked in blue, restaurants are in yellow and food shops are in green.
We’ve made a google map of some of our favorite things in the vicinity of the apartment.
